私が初めてstable diffusion を使った日に思ったことは「これはヴェンダースの『夢の果てまでも』の夢映像化装置だ」ということだった。
映画の中で或る登場人物の一人が自分の見た夢をそのまま映像としてテレビのような機械で見ることができるようになる。暫くすると彼女はベッドの上で夢中毒状態のようになってしまう。
というような昔見た映画のシーンを私はstable diffusion を触って思い出した。
かつてアドビのフォトショップが発売された当初、キャッチコピーに「心の景色を写す」というような文言が使われていた。
私は横尾忠則のフォトショップ作品集に深い感銘を受け、以来フォトショップユーザーになったが、stable diffusion にはそれに匹敵するほどの衝撃を与えられた。
フォトショップは写真の合成やコラージュ的な組み合わせで、ある程度、自由な「心の世界」「想像上の景色」といったものを作ることができた。
しかしstable diffusionはそれを圧倒的に越えていた。

The first day I used stable diffusion, I thought to myself, “This is the dream visualization device from Wenders’ ‘Until the End of the World’”.
In the film, one of the characters is able to see her dreams as they are on a TV-like machine. After a while, she ends up in bed, in a state of dream addiction.
I was reminded of a scene from a movie I saw a long time ago when I touched the stable diffusion.
When Adobe Photoshop was first released, its catchphrase was something like, “Capture the scenery of your mind”.
I was deeply impressed by Tadanori Yokoo’s Photoshop art collection and have been a Photoshop user ever since, but stable diffusion gave me a shock comparable to that.
Photoshop allows us to create “inner worlds” and “imaginary landscapes” by combining photos and collages.
However, stable diffusion was by far beyond that.

夢の啓示、については歴史上枚挙に暇がなかった。意識で連日考え続けた難問が、夢、もしくは半覚半睡状態の際に答えらしきものを閃く。
無意識というのは、よく喩えられるような「氷山の一角」といった、意識よりも更に深い地下や水中に潜んでいるイメージがある気がするが、それは何も暗い地下の印象でなく、意識が一点のスポットライトであれば、無意識というのは、局所的なライトに照らされていない、それ以外の広大な空間である気がする。
無意識という言葉には、意識の下、理性の下にある、ぼんやりとした感覚、という連想が付きまとう。
理性で意識する以外の、自分で意識されざる意識、というものには、自分の「下」、「地下」、「水面下」にあるものだけでなく、自己を越えた、意識を越えた高所からの視点といったものもある気がする。

There have been countless instances in history of dream revelations. A difficult question that one has been pondering day after day in the conscious mind is answered in a dream or in a half-awake, half-sleeping state.
The unconscious is often thought of as the “tip of the iceberg,” as in the image of something that lies even deeper underground or underwater than consciousness, but this is not an impression of a dark underground, and if consciousness is a single spotlight, the unconscious is a vast space that is not illuminated by localized lights, but is other than that. I feel that the unconscious is a vast space that is not illuminated by local lights.
The word “unconscious” is associated with a hazy sensation that lies beneath consciousness, beneath reason.
I feel that there is a kind of consciousness that is not conscious by oneself, that is not only “under”, “underground”, or “below the surface” of oneself, but also a perspective from a higher place beyond oneself, beyond consciousness.

続けていると、夢のイメージというものが、ユングのいう集合的無意識というものと繋がりがあるというのは何となく感覚として分かった。そこから神話や昔話、太古の伝説といったものにも繋がるというのも理解できた。
夢は物語調であることも多かった。
映画やテレビドラマ、漫画や小説は夢と似た「物語」形式だった。報道やニュース、ドキュメンタリーなどでもやはり「物語」が求められ、そこにお話のようなものが何もなければ、辻褄の合う説明や、納得感のある筋書きを人々は欲しがる。納得できるお話がなければ集団の伝聞で空想譚が広がる。
人の心は、夢の仕組み、無意識の働きでどうにも物語を心の底から求めてるようだった。
漫画や映画などを見ていると「これは夢を描いている、もしくは元にしている」というようなものが何となく分かった。

As I continued, I somehow understood that dream images are connected to what Jung called the collective unconscious. I also understood that the dream images were connected to myths, folktales, and ancient legends.
Dreams were often in the form of stories.
Movies, TV dramas, comic books, and novels are in a “story” format similar to dreams. News reports and documentaries also require a “story,” and if there is nothing like a story, people want an explanation that makes sense and a plot that makes sense. Without a convincing story, fantasy tales spread through collective hearsay.
It seemed that the human mind, through the mechanism of dreams and the workings of the unconscious, was somehow seeking a story from the bottom of its heart.
When I looked at comic books and movies, I somehow understood something like, “This is depicting or based on a dream.”

ユングの元型についての話は別として、夢診断だとか夢占いなどには興味がなかった。強引なこじつけめいた、何でも理性で解釈しようとする考えが浅はかだと思った。精神分析に対するナボコフの冷めた見方を知ったとき、「やはり自分の感覚は間違ってなかった」と思った。
その頃友人から教えてもらった日本の小説家が、やはり夢日記を付けているということを知り、「夢日記と発狂」の恐怖を払拭して、自分でも始めたのかもしれない。
始めると止められなくなった。
夢が「起床時の心に残る印象」から、ノート上の文字に移し替えられた。

Aside from Jung’s discussion of archetypes, I was not interested in dream diagnosis or dream divination. I thought it was a forced and convoluted idea, a shallow attempt to interpret everything through reason. When I learned of Nabokov’s cynical view of psychoanalysis, I knew that I was right.
I learned from a friend at the time that a Japanese novelist also kept a dream diary, which may have dispelled my fear of “dream diaries and madness,” and I may have started one myself.
Once I started, I couldn’t stop.
My dreams were transferred from “the impressions that linger in my mind when I wake up” to the words on the notebook.

夢の印象があまりに強く、幼児期と変わらず、朝、目覚めたとき、何時間も別世界で水の中やビルの屋上にいた幻影に圧倒されていた。私は見た夢が現実（と呼ばれる起床後の）景色の雑多な靄の中に消えてほしくない気がした。
川の水を手で両手で掬って、しばらくは手のひらに水は残っているが、それはやがて指の隙間から零れ落ちてなくなってしまう。
夢の記憶が所謂「現実」の騒音に掻き消される前に、その不気味な、美しいような、奇妙な感覚をメモに残したかった。

The impression of the dream was so strong that, as in early childhood, when I awoke in the morning, I was overwhelmed by the vision of being in another world for hours, in the water or on the roof of a building. I had the feeling that I did not want the dream I had seen to disappear into the motley haze of the real (post-waking) landscape.
I scooped up a handful of river water with both hands, and while the water remained in my palms for a while, it would eventually spill out through the gaps between my fingers and be gone.
I wanted to make a note of that eerie, beautiful, strange sensation before the memory of the dream was drowned out by the noise of the so-called “reality”.

夢について書かれているものの中には「夢には色がない」とどういう訳か、やけに堂々と言い切っているものもあり、またどういう根拠なのか「夢日記を付け続けると超能力者になれる」といったアドバイスや、「それを書き続けると発狂する」といった真逆の警告を脅迫調で意味ありげに記しているものもあった。

私はそれらのオカルト本や不思議全集などを見るにつけ「夢とはまだ人類にとって未開の地なのだ」「本には分かったようなことが書いてあるが、まだ分からないことの方が多いようだ」と思うのが常だった。

夢について考えるのは実に意味深いことだと思われたが、どうもそれについて書かれてあるものは内容もあやふやで、真偽不明なことを伝聞調で書いてあるものが多かった。「…と言われている」「…のようである」と風説を一通りまとめただけで、夢の謎について真剣に向き合っていないようにも思えた。

私は超能力を身に付けたい訳でもなく、まして発狂するなど怖い気もしたが、大学生の頃から見た夢のメモをノートに取るようになった。

Some of the articles on dreams were, for some reason, very brazenly stating that “dreams have no color,” while others, for whatever reason, gave advice such as “If you keep a dream diary, you will become a psychic,” or gave the exact opposite warning in a threatening and meaningful tone, “If you keep writing it, you will go insane.”

Whenever I read such occult books and complete works of wonders, I always thought that dreams are still an uncharted territory for mankind, and that although the books say they seem to have it all figured out, there are still many things we don’t know.

It seemed very meaningful to think about dreams, but what was written about them was often vague, and many of them were written in a hearsay tone of untruths. It seemed to me that the authors had only summarized the rumors by saying, “It is said that…” or “It seems that…,” and did not seem to have seriously addressed the mystery of the dream.

I had no desire to acquire psychic powers, much less go insane, but I began taking notes of the dreams I had when I was a college student.

中学生の頃、やはり夢にまた強烈なイメージを見た。女性が三人、金色の盆に乗っている。それはギリシャローマ時代の足を洗う場所か、噴水のような場所かもしれない。薄着の衣を纏った少女らは水浴びをしている。黄金に輝く建物内で半裸の彼女らは女神の娘たちのように三人並んで各人が大蓮のような金皿の上に立っている。輝く水が彼女らの体を伝って蓮の金皿に流れ落ちている。そこはギリシャ時代の神殿のように見える。
私はその夢を見た後、あまりに印象が強かったので、一体それは何だったのか、近所の図書館で本を漁って調べてみたが、中学生の見た夢について詳細な解説をしてくれるような類の本は見つからなかった。
子供の頃に見た夢については生々しく昨日のことのように今でも思い出すことがある。大きく心を占める夢の謎について気になり続け、ずっと子供の頃から繰り返し「あれは何なのか、なぜあんな夢を見るのか」と思い続けていた。

When I was in junior high school, I still saw another powerful image in my dream. Three women are on a golden tray. It could be a Greek-Roman foot-washing place or a fountain. The girls, clad in light clothing, are bathing in the water. Inside the golden building, three half-naked women stand in a row like the daughters of a goddess, each standing on a golden plate like a large lotus. The shining water is running down their bodies into the golden lotus dish. The place looks like a Greek temple.

After I had that dream, I was so impressed that I went to the local library to find out what it was all about, but I could not find any books that could give me a detailed explanation of the dream I had as a junior high school student.

I can still vividly recall the dreams I had as a child as if they were yesterday. I kept wondering about the mystery of the dreams that occupied so much of my mind, and I kept wondering what they were and why I had such dreams again and again since I was a child.

子供向け百科事典などはあまり頼りになる内容は書かれておらず、「夢についてはあまりよく分かっていない」などと記されていることが多かった。
夢占いだとか夢診断などという類の軽そうな内容のものはあまりに無責任で断定的だと思ったので殆ど手を出さなかった。

I have dreamed of intense images since childhood. Dreams of burning houses, pistol shots, falling airplanes. I used to think that everyone had such impressive dreams in their sleep that were equally similar to reality.
Sometimes I would go to the same place in my dreams, and sometimes I would have the same dream over and over again.
I had asked my parents and other people around me about the dreams I had at night, but most of them answered that they did not remember much about the content of the dreams, and since they did not seem to be that concerned about the content of the dreams, I had to look them up in encyclopedias and books about dreams.
Encyclopedias for children were not very reliable and often stated that “we don’t know much about dreams.”
I rarely touched anything that seemed to be lightweight, such as dream fortune-telling or dream diagnosis, because I thought it was too irresponsible and judgmental.

Stable Diffusionを実際使ってみると、オンラインサービスでは出力を拒否される類の画像を無制限に生成することができた。
私はStable Diffusionを触っていく中で「これは『夢の涯てまでも』だ」と思った。『夢の涯てまでも』はヴィム・ヴェンダースによる1991年公開の映画だが、「夢」というものについて深く考えさせられる内容で、私は非常に感銘を受けた映画だった。
夢、といっても、睡眠中に見る夢の方で、将来は云々、の方ではない。

When I actually used Stable Diffusion, I was able to generate an unlimited number of images of the kind that online services refuse to output.
As I was working with Stable Diffusion, I thought to myself, “This is ‘Until the End of the World’” . ‘Until the End of the World’ is a 1991 film by Wim Wenders, and I was very impressed by its deeply thought-provoking content about “dreams”.

I am referring here to the dreams we have during sleep, not to the “what about the future?”

調べてみると、オンラインサービスの写真生成ＡＩテクノロジーにはStable Diffusion なるものが使用されているようだった。どうやらそれはオープンソースで、PCがあればローカルで誰でも使えるらしく、高速のビデオカードがあれば更に快適に画像を出力できるようだった。
となるとこれはもう試してみる他なく、私はちょうどビデオ編集用にNVIDIAの高速GPU（ビデオカード）搭載のPCを購入したばかりだったので、これ幸いとばかり、知ったその日にStable Diffusion をインストールし使い始めた。

自身のローカル環境での画像出力なので、検閲も、コミュニティとやらの目を意識する必要もなく、思う存分、自分の見てみたいイメージをこれでもかという程、呪文で呼び出すことができる。
Stable Diffusion は予め画像のモデルデータをダウンロードする必要があるのだが、有志作成によるそれらのデータが公開されているサイトには、これまた各人がStable Diffusionで呼び出した（召喚した）美少女や魔物、風景、ポルノ画像、アニメイラストなどが、食傷するほどにずらりと公開されている。
私はStable Diffusionのモデルデータをダウンロードしながら、それらのグロテスクでもあり、自由でもあり、卑猥で破廉恥、ホラーでもスプラッターでもある、各人がやりたい放題やっている画像を眺めた。どう見てもここはガイドライン的な公序良俗遵守という雰囲気とは無縁で、規制の閾値は緩いようだった。

Upon further investigation, I found that the photo generation AI technology used by the online service is called Stable Diffusion. Apparently, it is open source and can be used locally by anyone with a PC, and with a fast video card, it can output images even more comfortably.
I had just purchased a PC with an NVIDIA high-speed GPU (video card) for video editing, soI installed Stable Diffusion on the same day I found out about it and started using it.

Since I output images in my local environment, I don’t have to worry about censorship or the eyes of the community, and I can spell out as many images as I want to see.
Stable Diffusion requires downloading the model data of the images beforehand, but the site where these data are made public by volunteers contains a variety of beautiful girls, demons, landscapes, pornographic images, anime illustrations, etc., that have been summoned by users using Stable Diffusion, to the point that it is almost too much to eat.

As I downloaded the Stable Diffusion model data, I looked at these grotesque, free, obscene, shameful, horrific, and splatter images of people doing whatever they wanted to do. By all accounts, this was not a guideline-like atmosphere of compliance with public order and decency, and the threshold for regulation seemed to be loose.
